A good one to try: Cherry Tomato by Sherwin Williams.

Orange: Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. If you want a vibrant hue, you can’t go wrong with orange. It can be warm, cozy, fun and lively. Try selecting a complex shade of orange such as coral, persimmon or terra cotta and you’re likely to enjoy it for a long period of time. Try Flower Pot by Sherwin Williams.

Yellow: Yellow conveys warmth and optimism and is considered a cheerful color. It is thought to enhance concentration and stimulate learning. It is, however, the most eye-fatiguing color and some people wonder if it can cause a baby to cry more often. In a nursery, go softer rather than brighter.

Green: The color options green provides are endless – chartreuse, pistachio, jade, green apple, grass green, lime green, etc. Green has more variations visible to the human eye over any other color. Try Celery by Sherwin Williams for a similar look.

Blue: Cobalt, periwinkle, navy, turquoise – blue is easily the most popular color and will never go out of style. It’s a soothing shade that can be used to create a tranquil oasis, open up a room or give it a crisp look.

Tip! In this room wood elements warm the blue up and create a tranquilizing, soothing effect perfect for a nursery or child’s room.

Purple: Purple is a versatile color that can appear both warm and cool. Plum, eggplant and cabernet are all varying shades of bright purple used to inspire and motivate. Violet, indigo and lilac create calm, contemplative spaces and are frequently used in little girl’s rooms. For a tranquil effect in a nursery, try soft lavender.

Pink: Pink is a color traditionally associated with girls. While lighter pinks are commonly used, don’t shy away from bolder colors. Magenta or hot pink can make a powerful statement. The secret is to use a bold color as an accent or in a combination with another color. Consider options like salmon or rose for larger rooms.

For more paint color inspiration, visit Sherwin Williams and use the Color Visualizer to determine what affect your want to create in your child’s room.

Joshua’s Safari Nursery

Baby & Toddler Featured Images

Baby and Toddler Featured Photos

Baby and Toddler Image Gallery

Featured Photos

Image Gallery

LC Kids

Legacy Classic

Legacy Classic Kids

Nursery

Safari

Incorporate Your Child’s Likes

kid and teen

Tips & Ideas

bedroom

Bookcase

bright

contrast

dream room

LC Kids

Legacy Classic

Legacy Classic Kids

media unit

Sherwin Williams

teen

toddler

Vanity

After the bathing, brushing and bedtime stories, you child will outgrow the bedroom that was once so perfect for them as a youngster. It’s time to design a bedroom to meet the needs of a teen’s busy lifestyle. The real challenge is to create a livable, beautiful space that allows you and your teen to live in harmony as grown-up and child.

With evolving opinions and changing preferences, you kid’s bedroom will need to grow right along with them. The bedroom has many functions; it’s a quiet retreat for reading, a social zone for friends and comfortable place for play. Give your teen a space to grow into by swapping out the rocking chair for a media unit to house a stereo. Bring in a bookcase to showcase trophies and collectables and a vanity for brushes and nail polish.

Include your child in the process of updating their bedroom. “They may not know paint chips from potato chips but kids know color”, says Mary Jane Johnson, an interior designer at Ingenue, Inc. with 36 years experience in the field. Enlisting your child’s help gives them a sense of ownership and accomplishment. Whatever their idea is, there is a way to make it work.

If your teens’ idea of a dream room encompasses every color in the rainbow, resist the urge to become overwhelmed. Bright colors can create vibrant patterns and no one can resist cheerful charm. A lively space encourages expression and allows the space to act as an outward reflection of who they are starting to become.

If your moody teens favorite color is black – work with her, not against her. Instead of fighting it, earn ‘Cool Mom of the Year’ for encouraging her unique design taste and suggesting some design savvy solutions. Stick with high contrast – black and white with a bright pink duvet for example – to enhance the overall drama of the room. Try Sherwin Williams Heartthrob for a hot pink accent wall.

Painting Tips

Tips & Ideas

ceiling

color

colors

finishes

flat

fluorescent light

glossier

glossy

incandescent light

LC Kids

Legacy Classic

Legacy Classic Kids

matte

morning light

natural light

paint

paint chips

paint samples

painting

paints

pint

reflect

reflection

shadow

If you’re having trouble narrowing down your favorite paint colors to just one selection, consider sampling them all. blues, purples and green – are ‘cool’ colors. Use these basics to determine a paint color based on the way you want the space to feel. Refreshing spaces are best achieved with cool colors while a cozy room will be accomplished with a warm hue.

Step 5: One color or two?
Successful color combinations are also made by using complementary colors, or colors that sit directly across from one another on the color wheel. By using the color wheel you can easily identify these combinations. They will appear more intense when paired together. Think about blue and orange or red and green.

Tip! This blue and orange complementary color combination creates a welcoming retreat. The mixture of pattern and texture injects personality and playfulness into the space while soft tones add balance.

The key is to select color combinations that have longevity and suite a range of styles. Once you’ve found the right paint, it will create a mood, rather than act as focal point for the room.

Paint Calculator

Tips & Ideas

gallons

LC Kids

Legacy Classic

Legacy Classic Kids

paint

paint calculator

painting

perimeter

quarts

You’ve picked the perfect paint color and are ready to get started. Before you begin painting, you’ll need to estimate the amount of paint you’ll need. Here’s an easy four step process to find the square footage of your room and translate it to gallons.

Step 1: Add together the length of each wall to find the perimeter of the room.

15 + 20 + 15 + 20 = 70 feet

Step 2: Multiply the perimeter (70 feet) by the wall height to find the total wall area.

70 x 8 = 560 square feet

Step 3: Subtract the area of the windows and doors to find the actual amount of wall area you’re painting. You can figure 20 square feet for each door (20 x 2 = 40) and 15 square feet for each window (15 x 3 = 45). This gives you the total wall area to be painted.

560 – 85 = 475 square feet

Step 4:

Divide the total wall area by 350 (the average square-foot coverage in each gallon can) to find the number of gallons of paint you need.

475 ÷ 350 = 1.4

-If the remainder is less than .5, order a couple of quarts to go with the gallons.
-If the remainder is more than .5, order an extra gallon.
-When in doubt round up, not down! You can always return unopened cans of paint.

For this example, you want to buy 1 gallon and 2 quarts of paint for a single coat. If you plan on applying a primer coat or multiple finish coats, multiple the results accordingly.

Tip! The average gallon of paint covers 350 square feet but you should always check the manufacturer’s specific recommendations and guidelines.

Tip! For more information on paint colors and painting tips, we suggest the Sherman Williams website.
